This course is designed to appeal to makers who want to improve their throwing skills with intensive throwing sessions in the morning led by Steve Booton who will share his passion for Japanese wood fired vessels and interest in the tea ceremony.
Steve will be demonstrating his approach to yunomi, guinomi and moon jars. He will show you how to make your own wooden tools, and you will be making up some simple shino and ash glazes, and then raw glazing. We will all be participating in the preparation and wood firing at the end of the week. You are welcome to bring some pre-made work for the firing.
Steve Booton completed a ceramics degree at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1981, opted for a teaching career in Sheffield. His teaching career lasted 14 years until an accident at work resulted in a period of incapacitation and ultimately, a career change and a complete cessation of anything clay related. He then endured a variety jobs caused by the need to support his family .
“During a visit to St.Ives in March 2006 for my daughters wedding, I was passing time by showing my son a Hamada pot in a local gallery and explaining to him the history of St.Ives. That conversation was the catalyst that led to my “moment of clarity “ a decision to return to ceramics after a prolonged absence.” He retired from full-time work, bought a small kiln and an old kickwheel and started making pots again.
